If you get little to no tax return, you’re doing it right. But everybody likes a return.

What’s a “return”?

Well mine was a non-zero number boosted by paying off a chunk of student loans so we were able to deduct the interest paid on that. So in other words, I spent thousands upon thousands of dollars and got back some fraction of that

It's what us poor people get every year and act like it's free money that wasn't ours in the first place.

That’s when the government gives you back your money and says “Thank you” for letting them earn interest on it.

Its like giving an interest-free loan to the IRS.

I can’t wait, we might go out to eat as a family where you don’t order from the counter and fill your own cup with Fanta.

* refund ( not return). Everyone files a return, only some people get a refund.

But at least you don’t have to write a check!

Ours were always close to $0 until the kids were i n daycare. Then it was a gravy train with biscuit wheels..

U nfortunately the dang kids got bigger and the childcare rebates went away..

I did mine and got roughly the same as as usual. I wonder how it would work out if I changed my stuff and got more per paycheck but I’m clueless on all that.

It can be hard to darn near impossible to do right sometimes though. I had 3 employers this year and tried to get my W-4 set up to come close to zeroing out but somehow I’m getting $6300 back which is way more than I ever have.

Thankfully in the U.K. we don’t have to go through all that crap (unless your self employed) as we are mostly paid PAYE (pay as you earn) so an amount based on what you earned the previous year is taken out each paycheck over the whole year.

So I don't have to get wrung through the emotions of 'do I owe anything, or 'will I get a windfall back to buy that thing I've wanted'.

I keep my withholding low so I always end up paying around $500. One nice benefit is that I don’t have to worry about getting them done early since no one is going to steal owing the IRS money (and if they do I’d be happy, not upset).

I’ve been meaning to adjust mine, but my income is highly volatile so it’s a low priority and I can only think of 3 years total of getting a large tax return. Large, in this context, is measured in running Paseos.

Mine were slow to arrive, but 4 or 5 were available online (mostly interest from accounts and debts). Because I bought and sold a house this year, that was a whole hurdle to fill out on the ol’ Turbo Tax.

I will get a decent refund, which will go right into paying some stuff off, so no adventure van for me yet, either.

I did adjust my taxes to get a little bit more bring home.  NExt years refund should be significantly less.  I hope not too much less...  like negative...

Although you may think that logic is sound...it isn’t. Those that fake tax returns usually use two stolen SSNs and a totally fake W2, claiming like 40k in wages and 10 k in withholding, just enough to get like a $3-4K refund. Usually the filed ID Theft return has nothing to do with your actual income.

I hit the $10k in taxes deduction with only adding half of my property taxes in (cause it’s $10k for not just property, but also state and local income tax) and I don’t even live in a high tax state. Stupid.

My return was more or less unaffected by the new tax law.  I don’t escrow my taxes though, so I pretty much use my return for that.  If I didn’t have to do that, I would cut back on my deductions.

I pay maximum plus $250 per paycheck and we owe every year. Wife has an option of doing her paycheck half as paycheck and half as a draw, and I think those draws kill us every year. I haven’t seen a return in more than a decade.

Turns out I owe the state and feds a little over 12,000. Still trying to work out how. My income was less than 50K last year. First tim e in a long time. I have top people looking into it. Top People. or just my cpa.

Brutal. That would imply you paid zero taxes, which is of course false.
